HW Regional Education Association Support
HWREA (Teachers' Union) membership strongly supports the elementary project. In survey data recently collected, over 80% of our membership were in favor of the project and see its many benefits. In talking to members, they have noted:
- A new school will not have the environmental hazards we currently face like asbestos, lead, freezing cold or very hot rooms that can distract from student learning
- With consolidation we will not longer be sending kids in specialized programs to a separate building but instead they'd be in the same building with their siblings and peers
- We can more efficiently distribute students to lower class sizes and deal with enrollment bubbles
- The school size is still pretty small* (indeed it's smaller than the high school was when I first started)
- With MSBA funding this project is actually more cost-effective than trying to renovate our deteriorating schools, freeing future funding for other projects across the District
- Building at the Cutler site preserves it as a neighborhood school where our students will attend with the same peers they'll head to Miles River and then the high school with - building a strong community feel
- Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions, and our students deserve nothing but the best facilities to learn in and to grow as people.
