"In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever we give out completes the circle and comes back to us"

- Flora Edwards

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."

- Albert Schweitzer

The Diversified Learning Program provides students with an opportunity to expand their learning beyond the four walls of a traditional classroom. Students should have earned the necessary amount of credits and demonstrated the academic, behavioral and attendance success that will allow them to take full advantage of these programs. Learning opportunities could include college level coursework, community service, independent study, internships, long-distance learning and student tutor programs. Check the Student Handbook for details.

Journal Entries

A requirement of the Diversified Learning course is to keep a journal that reflects the work you are doing. These will be weekly reflections about the assistance you are providing to another teacher or supervisor. It may change greatly from week to week or it may be more of a routine. You will turn your journals in to me every 10 weeks, but I will update you on that later. I will also occasionally give you a journal entry to respond to. These will be numbered and you may write them in a separate part of your journal. The first required entry is described below.

Ms. Lancella

Journal Entry 1

Because so many of you are giving of your time to help others, I would like you to select a quote that has to do with community service or volunteering your time. Please write the quote down, along with the author of the quote, and write a brief reflection as to why you selected this quote and how it relates to your community service.

"I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a finger print - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, and working hard."

- Oprah Winfrey

Hi everyone, I hope your first quarter Diversified Learning experience has been an enjoyable one. This web site will be our way of keeping in touch and knowing what you should be writing in your journals. Listen for occasional announcements in the morning to keep yourself updated as to when your assignments need to be turned in. Next semester I hope to have a DL bulletin board set up that will alert you to job opportunities available both inside and outside of school. If someone has some free time and would like to help me with designing it, I would greatly appreciate your help. Below are the instructions for Journal Entry #2. Have Fun!

Ms. Lancella

Journal Entry #2

You should find an article about a teenager who has made a difference in their community by performing in some type of service. Make a copy of the article and glue it into your journal. Write a reflection about the article. Some of the questions you may address are:

Why did you select this article?
What did you learn after reading this article?
What more can be done by teenagers to help their school and local communities?

As the first semester of DL draws to a close, this is the last journal entry before you make your presentation during the week of midterms. A description of what this entails will be available on on a date to be announced. Listen to the am announcements for more info.

Journal Entry #3

1) Describe what you accomplished in your Diversified Learning position during the months of November and December.

2) What qualities or skills do you feel are important to the school service that you perform? List at least five skills and explain their importance to your service. Are these the same set of skills that are needed to be a good student? Compare and contrast these two responsibilities.

For those of you who are new to DL this semester, I hope your experiences so far have been positive ones.  Remember you are to keep a journal and log in your weekly activities of the service you are providing.  You will also be required to respond to Journal Entries 1, 2 and 3 by the end of the semester.  A brief meeting with me to discuss your DL experience will take place in May.  More info to follow.

For those of you who are continuing with a DL experience from semester 1 or trying a new DL adventure, you also will keep a log of your activities in your journal.  You will be required to respond to Journal Entries 4, 5, 6 and 7.  A description of journal entries 4 and 5 is described below.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to stop by my room or e-mail me at lancellas@hwschools.net. Have Fun!

Journal Entries 4 and 5

Google community service for teenagers and select a web site that interests you.  Reflect on this site, why you selected it, what you learned, will you get involved in their community service activities, is there something we can do at HWRHS.  Take the time to look through at least five sites, but only reflect on one of the sites.

Journal Entry 6

Click on the link below and read the article. See what another high school is doing for its Senior Class. Write a reflection on the article. What are your thoughts? Would it work at HWRHS?

Journal Entry 7

Visit the Chris Daughtry "What about now?" video. Journal your reaction to what you see and hear. <here>

For your final assignment you are to write a thank you note to your DL supervisor. It does not go in your journal. You will hand this note to me on the day of your exit interview when you turn in your journal. Please make sure your note is on nice stationery or a note card. If your DL supervisor does not work at HWRHS please be sure the envelope is addressed with appropriate postage. Note cards are available free of charge in room 201.

Details to follow with a schedule during Senior Exam week for your exit interview. Check the bulletin board outside the Math/Science office for details.

Thanks for making my first year with Diversified Learning such a positive experience.
